Role Summary/Purpose
The Lead Engineer - Mechanical Design is an expert in engine design and mechanical development. They will lead complex design and development activities of engines for new product introductions and other product improvements. In this position, you will utilize your experience in engineering, problem solving, and 3D CAD design skills to create new designs while leading and mentoring other design engineers.
Essential Responsibilities
Design and develop new engine components and systems and solve design-related problems, including:
- Create system and component technical requirements for complex design activities while working in a cross-functional development team.
- Lead the 3D/2D design of large castings, forgings, machined components, and metal fabrications including the definition of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and ECO release.
- Perform engineering studies and calculations to define the requirements for virtual and physical validation of designs.
- Lead cross functional development teams, including leadership of design reviews.
- Create and release prototype hardware for design validation, as well as full product release for serial production.
- Provide technical engineering support to other functional areas as required, including other engineering teams, manufacturing, purchasing, application engineering, marketing, service, contracted engineering consultants, and suppliers.
- Lead the creation and continuous improvement of design practices.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design Technology from an accredited university or college.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in a Mechanical Design Engineering role.
- Knowledge of mechanical components and systems of reciprocating internal combustion engines and/or engine-driven packaged equipment.
- Expert-level skill in the use of Oracle ERP business system, Windchill PLM system, and high-end 3D CAD such as CREO.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10%, including domestic and international as required.
Desired Qualifications
- 2 years or more of mechanical design and/or development experience with components and systems of reciprocating internal combustion engines and/or engine-driven packaged equipment.
- Understanding of engine performance, simulation/FEA, engine testing, mechanical development, and product validation.
- Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance calculations.
- Knowledge of materials, manufacturing and assembly processes, and experience working with the associated functional organizations.
- New product design leadership experience.
- Current product support and problem-solving design experience.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of rapid prototype techniques.
- Comfortable in an international environment and have strong oral and written communication skills.
- Organizational skills required to manage multiple projects and/or activities
- Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing, oral, listening and presentation skills.
